TBE (Tick Vaccine)

Tick-borne encephalitis, TBE, is a tick-borne viral disease that causes encephalitis. The encephalitis caused by TBE can lead to severe consequences such as paralysis and, in the worst case, death. Milder symptoms are memory lapses and headaches. In addition to tick bites, there is also a risk of infection via other animals that carry ticks—for example, dogs, cats, mice and birds.

Suffering from TBE - when, where and how?

TBE is found mainly in large parts of Europe and Asia. TBE is a growing disease and everyone around risk areas is recommended to get vaccinated. The most significant risk areas are especially nature areas during the summer. If there are plans to stay out in the woods and fields, getting vaccinated well in advance is essential.

TBE vaccine - how many doses are needed?

Vaccination against TBE must be replenished throughout life to be effective. The vaccination is done in stages that are first dense and then sparser. The second dose is given about one month after the first dose. The third dose is given 5-12 months after the double dose. After that, it is essential to supplement the vaccination approximately every three to five years.

Does the TBE vaccine have any side effects?

In Sweden, there are no severe proven side effects from TBE vaccination. Common side effects are that the injection site becomes red, tender and swollen. Some people may experience nausea, fever and headaches. Some people may also feel a general feeling of illness, fatigue or muscle and joint pain. The side effects go away within a few days.
